Insights on how moms plan their year
A survey was fielded to BSM Media databases to collect insights from moms on how they plan their year, how this plan affects the shopping process and how new technology and social media platforms are affecting habits and views.
Before the Trip
• When it comes to pre-planning grocery shopping activities, 93% of moms make a list, 87% clip coupons, 79% use circulars, 67% use online coupons and 62% use meal planning and recipes
• The majority of moms let their spouse (74%) and kids (62%) contribute to the shopping list.
• The most common method of keeping a grocery list is still on a piece of paper (81%).
• Price (1), deals (2) and proximity (3) determine store choices.
At the Store
The most popular ways to utilize technology in grocery shopping are:
• Purchasing items from an online retailer: 40%
• Using a mobile device to compare prices and brands: 26%
• Post questions/comments on social media: 25%
• The same purchasing factors (price, quality and overall value) factor in when making a grocery store purchase.
• 52% are spending between 20-40% of their monthly budget at the grocery store.
Taking Notice
The majority of moms (52%) prefer to be spoken to as a mom in advertising.
• 60% appreciate it when brands skew their advertising to parents.
• The most popular ways to interact with a brand are:
“Liking” them on Facebook: 74%
Via their website: 73%
Following on Twitter: 38%
Throughout the Year
• 72% of moms say the school calendar dictates yearly planning
• Holiday shopping prompts shopping changes for 88% of women
• Stressed out, but happy: Holiday shopping brings the most happiness and the most stress for moms. Summer break ranked #2 and Fall/Thanksgiving ranked #3.
